A remarkable initiative is emerging from Parami University, led by three dedicated Parami students—Myat Moe Kywe, Bhone Khant Theim, and Ming Thet Paing—alongside staff member Mason. The Parami undergraduate students are alumni of U.S. government-funded exchange programs. This team has been selected as one of the top four out of 32 applications for the 2024 Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF 2024). Their project, the Padauk Classroom, aims to revolutionize education in Myanmar by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into learning and teaching.
The Impact of AI on Education
The rapid advancement in AI technology is reshaping the educational landscape, prompting important discussions among educators about the relevance of traditional assessment methods. With generative AI becoming more prevalent, many question whether conventional written assessments remain applicable. While AI offers numerous benefits, its improper utilization can pose significant ethical challenges and downsides for educators and students.
According to a UNESCO (2023)Â report, integrating ethical AI in education is crucial to ensuring accessibility. Failure to address these issues may widen the technological divide and perpetuate discrimination, inequalities, and ethical violations in educational settings.
Padauk Classroom project director Mason explains, "The conventional methods of assessing students are no longer valid. Since AI is here to stay with us, and we cannot say no to it, we must start working on incorporating AI into our teaching and learning processes."
Addressing the Crisis in Myanmar
Myanmar faces unique challenges in adapting to this evolving educational landscape. The country's educational system has been significantly disrupted, particularly in rural areas. However, non-state community schools and alternative education systems have emerged as vital opportunities to intervene in this crisis and bring about a paradigm shift in education.
Recognizing this urgent need, the Padauk Classroom project aims to empower students, educators, and community-based organizations to enhance their AI-integrated digital self-efficacy. The project focuses on increasing accessibility and effectiveness in higher education through the following strategies:
Comprehensive AI Integrated Digital Literacy Training for Students: Providing students with essential skills to navigate an AI-driven world.
Education Technology Training and Ethical AI Solutions for Educators: Equipping educators with the tools to implement technology effectively and ethically in their teaching practices.
Support for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs): Assisting CBOs in establishing their own learning management systems to facilitate better learning environments.
"Myanmar's educational landscape faces profound challenges, especially in ethnic areas where disruptions are most severe. Initiatives like the Padauk Classroom project can bring about a much-needed transformation. By equipping students, educators, and community-based organizations with essential skills and technology, this project is an initial step toward building a more inclusive and resilient educational system." —Mason, Project Director
The team aims to empower and enhance the capabilities of interim education institutions in ethnic areas of Myanmar through a 10-week program targeting 200 students with digital literacy and AI usage, alongside in-person workshops for 60 educators focused on the ethical implementation of education technology, ultimately improving the accessibility and effectiveness of education in the region.
Sustainable Outcomes for Future Generations
As a sustainable outcome of the Padauk Classroom project, the team will compile teaching materials on AI-integrated digital training and education technology into self-paced online courses. This will ensure public access for prospective students and emerging educators nationwide.
The ultimate goal of this initiative is to enhance the accessibility of disrupted higher education in Myanmar and revolutionize the effectiveness of digital classrooms through integrated AI technology. By doing so, the Padauk Classroom aims to create a brighter, more inclusive educational future for students, educators, and community-based interim education providers in Myanmar.
The Padauk Classroom project is a testament to students' potential to enact meaningful change in their communities. With the support of the Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund, this initiative not only addresses pressing educational challenges but also paves the way for a new era of learning in Myanmar.Â
