On March 28, a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, the strongest in over a century. With its epicenter in Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, the quake caused widespread devastation, displacing families, destroying homes, and taking lives.
At Parami University, the emotional toll was profound, while no students were physically harmed. One student lost her home and grandfather, and many Parami staff members are grieving the loss of loved ones.
In the immediate aftermath, communication and basic services were severely disrupted. Electricity and internet outages made it difficult to reach students and assess their safety. The Parami team on the ground worked tirelessly to contact every student and provide critical support.
Meanwhile, access to food, clean water, medicine, and shelter was urgently needed—not only for the students but also for their families and communities.
On March 29, 2025, Parami University launched an emergency relief campaign, and the global community's response was overwhelming.
Through the Stand with Parami: The Myanmar Earthquake Emergency Campaign, Parami University raised over $35,000 from the public and $45,000 from long-term dedicated donors of Parami and several other humanitarian organizations, giving a total of over $80,000. Approximately 50% of the funds raised have been allocated to emergency relief.
Thanks to the generous support, Parami:
Provide emergency food and shelter at PDO Monastic School in Mandalay
Distribute essential supplies to families in Amarapura
Deliver solar lights and tarps to heavily impacted areas like Sagaing and Inlay
These efforts provided physical relief, emotional strength, and hope during a time of great uncertainty.
On behalf of the Parami University management team, Phoo Pwint Thiri Khine (Thea), Director of Institutional Advancement, expressed, “I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to our campaign. Your generosity has made it possible for us to respond quickly and bring vital relief to communities in need across Myanmar, and we're not done yet. We're continuing to reach further and support more.”
While the fundraising campaign has ended, our long-term recovery efforts continue. Parami remains committed to supporting students, staff, and their families as they rebuild and heal from this life-altering event.
