People of Parami: Navya Mohan guides students to discover their potential

At Parami University, academic advising is more than just guiding students through course selections. It’s about building relationships, fostering resilience, and nurturing academic and personal growth—especially in an online environment that brings together learners from Myanmar, Thailand, and Kenya. In this edition of People of Parami, we highlight Navya Mohan, an academic advisor whose passion for education equity and student empowerment shines through in every conversation she has.

With a background in Marketing and Public Policy from the University of Maryland, Navya’s journey into education began with curriculum development, peer counseling, and working closely with diverse student populations. Her deep commitment to international education and desire to uplift students from all walks of life led her directly to Parami.

Navya sees her role as much more than academic advising. While course planning and discussions are part of the work, her primary goal is to be a consistent source of encouragement, guidance, and advocacy throughout each student’s journey—and even after they graduate. Despite working in a virtual environment, she emphasizes that meaningful connections are still possible.

“Checking in with students about their daily lives and learning about their background helps build trust and understanding. Even though we’re not in the same physical space, relationships still thrive,” she explains.

What fuels Navya’s motivation every day is the civic-minded spirit of the students she works with. Many of them are pursuing degrees in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), and she is constantly inspired by their commitment to using their education as a tool for justice and equity. “Parami students are incredibly civically engaged,” she says. “It’s amazing to work with young people who are so driven by the desire to create positive change in their communities.”

Over time, she’s witnessed powerful student transformations. Some arrived unsure of themselves and their capabilities.. But through patient advising, encouragement, and consistent support, many of those same students have become confident, capable, and passionate learners.

“Advising is a way to help students see what we see in them—brilliant, talented individuals who are going to shape the future.”—Navya Mohan

In addition to one-on-one support, Navya leads skill-building workshops through the Language and Learning Center (L&LC), focusing on topics like resume writing, academic skills, and public speaking. These sessions offer students practical tools for success while also creating space for open discussion and peer connection. Navya approaches each session with flexibility and care, adapting content to be relevant to students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds.

She believes critical thinking is one of the most important skills students develop at Parami. While they learn about politics, economics, and data, they are also honing their ability to question, reason, and analyze—a foundation that will serve them well no matter their future path. Parami’s liberal arts approach, she says, gives students the chance to explore new ideas, engage with differing perspectives, and grow as thoughtful, reflective changemakers.

Navya is proud of Parami’s personalized advising system, where advisors aim to understand students holistically. She also sees potential for more informal student engagement, such as virtual community events and casual hangouts. “We could all use a little more joy and connection,” she adds with a smile, noting that karaoke nights and drop-in office hours could make the virtual experience feel more personal and meaningful for students.

Her work with Parami students has been profoundly meaningful. “I’ve learned so much from them—their resilience, their determination, their insights. They’ve made me a better listener and advisor.”

For Navya, the most rewarding part of her job is the connection she builds with students. Listening to their stories, learning about their passions, and witnessing their growth gives her hope for the future. “I feel so lucky to be part of this journey with them,” she says. “These students are incredible changemakers, and I’m honored to be along for the ride.”

For students who may be struggling with the transition to university or online learning, she offers a gentle reminder: “You are not alone. Behind every screen is a community that cares for you deeply. Don’t hesitate to reach out—we’re here for you.
