At Parami University, academic advisors play a crucial role in supporting students across Myanmar, Thailand, and Kenya. One of them is Anny Lin, who brings lived experience, cultural sensitivity, and a deep commitment to student success.
Raised in China and later in a small U.S. town, Anny was the first in her family to finish high school and attend college. She majored in International Affairs at George Washington University and found her passion for supporting marginalized students. A course on Southeast Asia and a senior thesis on Rohingya refugee teachers inspired her to learn more about Myanmar, eventually bringing her to Parami through the VIA Fellowship.
“Upon graduating, I knew I wanted to ethically support marginalized students in higher education while learning more about Myanmar,” she said.
Since joining in 2023, Anny has provided holistic academic advising, helping students choose courses, manage challenges, apply for scholarships, and build confidence. She also tutors in the Language and Learning Center, leads skills workshops, and teaches Social Science Research Skills.
Anny’s approach begins with understanding each student’s background. “I want students to feel seen, safe, and supported,” she said. This has been especially vital for learners in refugee camps or conflict zones, where she provides regular check-ins and coordinates with NGOs like FLEN to ensure ongoing support.

“Parami students are incredibly resilient and committed to their communities,” she shared. “It’s rewarding to witness their growth.”
Despite challenges like poor internet or electricity, Anny stays flexible, rescheduling meetings, sending voice notes, and staying connected however she can. Small gestures, like sending end-of-term notes or celebrating milestones, help build trust. “No matter the challenge, my top priority is staying connected with my students,” Anny stressed.
She believes the liberal arts model at Parami equips students with critical thinking, empathy, and adaptability—skills they can carry into any future.
“The most fulfilling part of my work,” Anny said, “is seeing students overcome obstacles and become confident in their academic and personal journeys.”
