What does it truly take to build a career in data management within Myanmar’s humanitarian and development sectors?

Through the Data Talk Series with MIMU, students at Parami University explored this question in depth—gaining practical insights into information management, data storytelling, security, and GIS applications. From December 16, 2025, to January 14, 2026, the Parami University Career Development Center partnered with the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU) to deliver a four-part series led by experienced practitioners. Each session connected technical knowledge with real-world applications, offering aspiring data professionals a clearer roadmap for entering and advancing in the field.

The Information Management Orientation session was led by Data Manager Ma Ei Ei Thein, who is responsible for managing MIMU and HDP Nexus 5W. In this session, she focused on data and information management in humanitarian contexts. She also provided a brief introduction to data visualization and data analysis, followed by an overview of career pathways in information management. At the entry level, roles include Data Assistant, Data Entry Clerk, Research Assistant, and M&E Assistant. Mid-level roles include Database Officer, Data Analyst, Information Management Officer, and M&E Officer. Senior-level roles include Information Management Manager, M&E Manager or Coordinator, and Data Manager or Coordinator. During the session, he trained participants in digital communication through data visualizations, maps, and graphic design. The speaker also shared numerous resources and tools for participants to explore independently, drawing from his expertise in communication models.

Session 3: Core Concepts of Data Security

The Core Concepts of Data Security session was led by Ko Phyo Kyi, an ICT associate and versatile full-stack developer with expertise in server and network management, database administration, Python scripting, and data visualization using Power BI. In this session, he shared the core concepts of data security and artificial intelligence. He also explained modern security threats in detail and provided practical tips for managing risks within data management systems.

Session 4: Application of GIS Concepts in Project Development and Management

The Application of GIS Concepts in Project Development and Management session was conducted by GIS Analyst Ko Zaw Win with over 15 years of experience in GIS and remote sensing. He previously worked with UNODC, Wildlife Conservation Society Myanmar, and the Forestry Department. In this session, he focused on applying GIS concepts to project development and management. He also presented diverse GIS project models and various examples of GIS application areas.

The Data Talk Series with the Myanmar Information Management Unit (MIMU) provided students with a comprehensive overview of data management in the humanitarian and development sectors. Participants gained insight into career pathways, from entry-level to specialized roles, and learned the importance of data visualization, digital communication, data security, artificial intelligence, and GIS in supporting effective decision-making. Through practical examples and interactive discussions, the sessions emphasized continuous learning, technical skill development, and adaptability for building successful careers in data management.
