From Parami to Bard: Associate degree alumnus talks about transferring to New York campus

Parami's associate degree alumnus Thu Riya Tun

Parami alumnus Thu Riya Tun is now studying at Bard College in upstate New York, majoring in Computer Science, after completing his associate degree online at Parami University this year. The transition from Parami University to Bard College marked a journey filled with challenges and growth. As someone who had thrived in Parami's online learning environment, he sought new experiences at Bard, particularly in-person interactions and campus life. However, as he reflects on his journey, he recognizes the unique strengths of Parami's educational model and its lasting impact on his academic and personal development.

A strong foundation at Parami

Parami University was key to his academic growth, providing a strong foundation in online learning and support. "Bard and Parami both offer great student guidance," he said, crediting Parami for his smooth transition to Bard.

The liberal arts curriculum at Parami prepared him for Bard's rigor, while the academic support boosted his confidence. "Parami gave me the knowledge to succeed," he shared, adding that his advisor and faculty helped him overcome challenges and improve.

A new social experience

While Parami provided an excellent academic foundation, Thu Riya chose Bard to experience campus life. Bard offered opportunities for social engagement that he felt would enhance his growth.

He noticed that conversations and social dynamics at Bard differed from those at Parami. "Communication here is different—even basic interactions," he noted, finding Bard students more artistic and open to serious discussions, which intrigued him.

Academic rigor

When comparing academics, he emphasized that Parami provided the same quality of education as Bard despite being an online institution. "The workload is similar, but Bard's in-person campus life makes it feel different. There's always something happening—whether it's activities or social events—which can make it harder to focus solely on studies," he explained.

At Parami, students benefit from focusing on their studies without the distractions of a physical campus. "If you're looking for just a strong academic experience, Parami is more than enough. You don't need to spend all that extra money to study abroad and get the same quality of education," he pointed out. Parami's model offers flexibility and affordability while maintaining high educational standards, which he believes is a significant advantage for many students.

Reflections on the transition

Reflecting on his time at Parami, Thu Riya Tun expressed pride, saying, "Parami is doing great—more than I ever expected." He appreciates the institution's impact on his personal and academic growth and believes its innovative approach will benefit future students.

He emphasized that, despite being an online institution, Parami fosters responsibility through its academic structure, helping students become well-rounded individuals. Thu Riya noted that the learning hub exemplifies Parami's efforts to build community among students.

He fondly recalled in-person meetups, particularly the geometric event organized by Parami's student-led club, and valued the moments spent with classmates who shared his language and background.

He also offered his opinion for those considering pursuing further education at other institutions after graduating from the Parami-Bard dual associate degree program: "If your goal is purely academic, Parami is more than enough. It's better to focus on your studies without the distractions of campus life, and you're getting the same quality of education." However, for students who want a more social experience, traditional campuses like Bard offer unique opportunities to explore new environments and engage with diverse communities.
