About the Course
Course Details
Telling Stories: The Art of Fiction will introduce students to the diversity of contemporary fiction, and allow them to experiment in writing across multiple genres, so they can find their own voices as storytellers. The ability to tell powerful, engaging and compelling stories is central to many professional contexts, and through developing their skills as fiction writers, students will also hone their ability to put their storytelling skills to work in their professional lives.
People care about stories and knowing how to tell them in an engaging way is a valuable skill. When you learn how to create written work that is persuasive, informative and moving you encourage readers to connect with different ideas and to see the world in a different light.
The main objective of this course is to give students hands-on experience as writers, storytellers and editors, taking seriously the idea that writing, storytelling and editing are forms of craft that can be developed and cultivated.
After course completion, students will:
have an understanding of different genres of fiction
be able to write across multiple genres and forms including science fiction, ghost stories, short stories and flash fiction
Have a greater appreciation of the diversity of contemporary fiction
Understand and put into practice editorial strategies for bringing greater focus and clarity to their writing
Note that this course is mainly practical: students will learn about form and genre and apply this practically each week through their own writing practice.
