Kyaw Hsan Hlaing

Kyaw Hsan Hlaing is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Government at Cornell University. He studies comparative politics and international relations, with a focus on revolution, movement, regime change, violence, political culture, democratic backsliding, authoritarianism, and rebel politics. 

Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked as an independent journalist covering the COVID-19 pandemic, human rights, and issues related to the 2021 military coup for international outlets, including TIME, Foreign Policy, The Diplomat, Al Jazeera, and others. 

He holds a BA in Asian Studies, Summa Cum Laude, from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, following a seven-year gap after leaving the University of Distance Education at Sittwe University, Myanmar. Kyaw Hsan enjoys hiking, traveling, reading, photographing, and playing football and tennis.
