Dr. Andrey Tolstoy

Faculty of Social Science and Humanities

Dr. Andrey Tolstoy received his PhD in Film & Media Studies and Comparative Literature from Yale University. His dissertation (“Where do we go when we go off-the-grid?”) examined how grids evolved as a tool for managing populations, resources, and knowledge and how the idea of going off-the-grid became an archetype in several schools of documentary filmmaking.

From 2017 to 2019, Dr. Tolstoy served as a Humanities Professor at the Parami Leadership Program in Yangon, teaching courses in media studies and PPE (Politics, Philosophy, and Economics) and directing student research in the social sciences.

His current research focuses on the psychology of academic performance. He is the founder of Tolstoy & Partners, an education consultancy specializing in complex cases that require mental health and executive function support. He returns to Parami as a visiting instructor to teach a course titled “Visual Media and Our Mental Health.” It combines a media studies curriculum with executive function training, art therapy, and a general introduction to the psychology of learning, creativity, and trauma.
